How to take good photos of dogs and kids… together!

Girl time

How to take good photos of dogs and kids can seem like a daunting task, especially if you are not a seasoned photographer.   You want to capture their personality and energy, but they often don’t cooperate. The same goes for dogs – they’re always on the move, and it can be hard to get a good shot. But with a little bit of creativity and some well-practiced techniques, you can capture some amazing shots of these two important members of your family.  There are a few things you can do to increase your chances of getting great photos.

#1 Try to tell a story with your pictures. Instead of just taking a snapshot of your child playing with the dog, try to capture a moment that reflects their relationship. What is your child and dog doing in the photo? Is your dog licking your child’s face, or is your child throwing a ball for the dog to fetch?   Are they snuggling on the couch? Telling a story will help to add context and interest to your photo. These types of pictures are not only informative, but they’re also fun to look at.  They will bring back more emotions Also, kids love to role play… come up with ideas together:  they could be pirates, superheroes, etc.

#2 Get help from a friend.  Work together to create photos for both of you and make an activity out of it.

#3 Don’t be afraid to get down on their level. This will help you to see the world from their perspective, and it will also make them more comfortable with you.

#4 If inside, find a spot near a window where the light is soft and diffused. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can create harsh shadows and squinty eyes.  Position them so that they are facing the light. This will help to avoid any dark shadows on their face.

#5 If outside, find a spot in the shade to avoid direct sunlight.  Find an area where they can sit on (bench, large rock).  Or around a “natural frame” like surrounded by trees, or in a doorway.  Experiment with different angles and compositions to find what looks best for your photo.

#6 Finally, be patient. Dogs and children alike can sense when you’re in a hurry, and they’ll reciprocate by being fidgety themselves. If you take your time and wait for the perfect moment, you’re more likely to get a great picture.  And hey… some of the best pictures are the funny ones, the ones that didn’t turn out like we expected!

There is something extra special about the connection between a child and their dog

Photographer captures heartwarming bond between child and pet

by

Best friends forever

Best friends forever

Pets can have an intense impact on everyone’s life but there is something extra special about the connection between a child and their dog.

That bond — be it best friend, sibling, confidant, guardian, partner-in-crime or a combination of all — has recently been captured by the lens of Kawartha Lakes photographer Vicky Knowler in her project, “My Dog & Me.”

Knowler worked in the marketing, real estate and corporate relocation sectors up until five years ago when she decided to make her passion for photography a career in order to spend more time with her children. Last summer, Knowler and her family moved from Toronto to Woodville where she has opened a full-time studio.

During the COVID-19 pandemic began, Knowler began seeing the positive impact her cat, Wendy, played in her family’s well-being. When the third wave sent students back to virtual learning in January, her children — particularly her youngest — were sad to be separated from school and the many friends they had made. Wendy gladly filled the gap.

“I was so glad to have her. She was an awesome companion and such an amazing, emotional support,” said Knowler, who found out many others felt the same way about their pets after she posted a comment to this extent on Facebook.

“There was lots of engagement. I was surprised with how many people responded with how their child has bonded with their pet. I know that, just from our own cat, it’s a strong bond. But when it comes to dogs, there seems to be a much greater emotional connection. It’s not ownership; it’s a sister, it’s a brother, it’s a comfort knowing they will not be judged but rather loved unconditionally.”

Knowler also knew the project wasn’t going to just be about taking pictures of children and dogs.

“It’s not just an image. It’s the story behind the image,” said Knowles who took the time to chat with the children before and during her shoots. “I was touched deeply by how deep and strong their bonds are.”

To build further on the project’s success, Knowler is organizing three fundraising My Dog & Me shoots. Partial proceeds will be donated to Oakville (April 23), Toronto (April 24) and Kawartha Lakes (May 7) humane societies. Knowler is collaborating with Victoria Feeds for the Lindsay event.

She’s also recently launched a new project, “In Daddy’s Shoes,” inspired by the profound impact her own father has had on her life.

“It’s all about learning from the child’s perspective what daddy means to them,” said Knowler, who not only incorporates a variety of relevant ‘props’ — from work boots and gloves to hockey equipment — but also captures it all on video. “It’s a nice way to highlight those memories.”

How to celebrate a child’s birthday during covid?

Vicky Knowler / Blog, Photography Session / / 0 Comments

It’s hard to celebrate a child’s birthday during the pandemic. There are so many things that you can’t do, and the last thing we want is to disappoint our kids. But don’t worry, we’ve got an idea to make birthdays special. Whether you want to have a small celebration at home with a couple of friends or have many friends gather in a park, we’ve got something for you. So read on and find the perfect way to celebrate your birthday this year!

Super girl power

Having a child’s birthday party can be lots of fun, but it can also be a lot of work. Coming up with ideas for what to do can be tricky, especially during the pandemic. One great option is to have a photoshoot! Not only will your child enjoy it, but you’ll have fun memories to look back on for years to come.

If you only want the close family to participate and a couple of close friends, you can create a themed photoshoot in your backyard. But if you want to invite a larger group, why not take the party to a park! And don’t forget that winter photos are very nice too!

Sister fun!

-Pick a location. Whether you stay home or go to a park, make sure the setting is perfect for your child’s birthday party photoshoot.

-Choose a theme. If your child is into superheroes, pirates, princesses or any other theme, let that guide your decorations and props.

-Get creative with the costumes and decorations and have your child participate in the preparations. This will make the photoshoot even more special for them.

-Make sure you have enough time to take photos of all the guests. It’s no fun if some people have to leave before the party is over!

-Make a cake that match with the theme and take photos of your child and friends around it wearing their costumes.

-Take lots of photos! You’ll want to have a record of this special birthday. And don’t forget to send copies to the birthday child’s friends!

We hope these ideas help you plan a fun, memorable photoshoot birthday. If you don’t feel up to taking the photos, you can always find a local photographer that will take them for you, turning this milestone event into a professional photoshoot!

The bond between children and their dogs is powerful!

Vicky Knowler / Blog, Gallery, Photos / / 0 Comments

The bond between children and their dogs is powerful!  My hope is that throughout this photography project,  you can see how special the bond is between them…

I love photographing children! I love telling stories with my images. I become a child myself and get completely immersed in an imaginary world of dreams and fantasy that I remember living in as a child….when life was my playground and anything was possible. Remember those days? I think I’m still living in that world!

When I work with children, I always try to get a sense of their world. What are they interested in? What makes them laugh? What do they like to do for fun? For me, it’s all about creating an image that tells a story and capturing an emotion. For this project, the children were thrilled when they found out the story was going to be about them and their best friend! I truly enjoyed learning about why their dog is so special to them. There is nothing like the bond between children and their dog. In most cases, that relationship is unbreakable. I think these photos are a testament to the power of that love.

I hope you enjoy looking through these images as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Keeping Baby Safe during a Newborn Photoshoot

Vicky Knowler / Uncategorized / / 0 Comments

Newborn photography has been a growing industry, but there are currently no safety regulations in place.  Anyone who owns a camera can take photos of newborns without any training and with absolutely zero knowledge. This could potentially put all infants at risk because no one has any training or knowledge on how to properly care for them!

SAFE POSING WITH COMPOSITE IMAGES

A photographer is an artist capturing the beauty of your child in their own unique way. They are responsible for creating breathtaking portraits that you will treasure forever!   The beautiful images these professionals produce often depend on composites, made up of two pictures that ensure the safety and well-being for your child such as risk of imbalance, risk of asphyxiation, risk of overheating, etc.

SAFETY CHECKLIST

As per APNPI (Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International) https://apnpi.com/

These are some items to keep in mind at your session.

While taking pictures of your new baby should be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved, it’s important to remember that nobody owns or controls these moments but you. If something makes you uncomfortable as a parent, then do not hesitate in speaking up and letting us know so we have time keep them from happening again!

  • Room temperature – most photographers will heat the room so that baby is not cold.
    • Watch for signs of overheating – sweaty neckline, mottled skin, redness in the face, irritability.
  • Air quality:
    • Props/blankets look and smell clean.  Musty and mildewy smells could indicate the presence of mold growing in a damp, warm studio.  If you are concerned about your baby breathing in mold toxins, don’t hesitate to choose to leave with your baby.
    • Essential oils are trendy right now, but can cause allergic reactions and sensitivities.  Don’t hesitate to ask your photographer to remove the use of oils if you are uncomfortable with them.
    • Other environmental allergens such as dust, pets, foods, etc.
  • Tripping hazards
    • Cords are taped down, rug grippers are used with flokati and floor boards. Props are put away.  Waste and spills should be cleaned immediately, without delay.
  • Antiques and props
    • watch for splinters and nails
    • Props are weighted properly.
    • Newborns should never be positioned in or on glass containers or objects that can break or shatter.
  • Posing surfaces should be an adequate size to prevent accidents
    • biomechanical supports should be in place to lessen the chance of ergonomic injuries
    • wooden backgrounds should be secured to avoid tipping and falls.
    • Sandbags are used to weight props and light stands.
  • Your newborn is supported by human hands at ALL TIMES throughout risky poses.
    • This ensures that babies will not be at risk of falls, central cyanosis, or positional asphyxiation – three very dangerous scenarios that can result in very seriously injury or even death.
  • In the absence of an assistant, parents, especially mothers, should never be asked to stay further away from babe as is sometimes requested due to the idea that the smell of mother’s milk will cause the baby to become unsettled. Should the baby show signs of hunger such as the rooting that can occur when they sense and smell their mother, they should be given appropriate time to feed. A satisfied baby will not be unsettled due to the smell of milk, and it is better to have an extra set of hands close by than not.
  • Your photographer, assistant or other people present are not ill.
    • Where and when illness may delay your session beyond an appropriate timeline of around 1-2 weeks, a good photographer should either have an assistant photographer on hand to complete your session or provide referrals to other respected photographers working in a similar style. For posed newborn work, your session is time sensitive and should be completed sometime within the first two to three weeks of life. Unposed, documentary or lifestyle sessions can be completed in longer timelines and rescheduling should be easier with these types of sessions
  • Your photographer does not touch, move, or attempt to remove any medical items such as belly button clamps, circumcision gauze, etc.
  • Your baby is not showing signs of central cyanosis – the bluish discoloration around the core, lips and tongue.  This can be quite dangerous. According to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Centre, central cyanosis is never normal in the newborn period, and is almost always linked to a lower amount of oxygen in the blood. For this reason, the photographer should be concerned regarding the cause of deoxygenation whenever central cyanosis is present.
  • Your photographer has hand sanitizer available.
  • Adequate seating and changing areas are available and suitable for new moms and those recovering from C-sections.
  • Easy access to drinking water.
  • Your photographer is insured in order to protect you in the event of accidents.

Questions to ask potential photographers before hiring one:

  • HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH NEWBORNS?
  • DO YOU HAVE AN ASSISTANT OR SPOTTER?
  • DO YOU DO COMPOSITE IMAGES?
  • IS YOUR BUSINESS INSURED? ARE YOU A LEGAL BUSINESS?
  • IS YOUR STUDIO SANITIZED BETWEEN SESSIONS?
  • WHAT PRECAUTIONS DO YOU TAKE TO KEEP BABY SAFE AND COMFORTABLE?

5 Couple Photography Tips for You & Your Partner

champagne_admin / Blog / / 1 Comment

With the holidays right around the corner and Valentine’s Day fast-approaching, having a couple photography session can be a great way to wrap up the year or even snap some photos for your annual greeting cards. As one of the leading photo studios in Mississauga, Champagne Photography has helped plenty of couples celebrate the season with a personalized photo shoot.

Below are a few tips and ideas to help inspire you this year!

Stick to Your Strong Poses

When taking photographs of couples, too many poses can muddle things up. You might want to get the most bang for your buck, but often striking one pose after another can cause things to look a bit unnatural in the end. Stick to several poses that you find comfortable and unique. Perhaps you have a particular way of embracing each other: these types of poses will make it easier for a photographer to snap the perfect picture.

Choose the Location in Advance

Are there some locations that you love to frequent around the house or in the neighborhood? Perhaps there’s a nearby park where you like to spend time with your partner. These types of locales make great destinations for photo shoots. This is because they’re personal and reflect a location you both love as well as familiar, making you more comfortable during the process.

Add Kids & Pets

Are you trying to come up with some fun Valentine’s Day ideas for your photoshoot? Maybe you’re just looking to do something different. One way you can do so is to include some guests in the pictures, like your children or favorite furry friends. You could even dress up your four-legged friends as cupid if they don’t mind of course.

Wear What Feels Comfortable

When it comes to couple or family photography, it’s ok to look your best, but always dress comfortably. If you’re shooting photos outside, dress for the season; this means no skimpy clothes during cold fall weather or three-piece suits in the summertime. This will help you relax during the photo shoot as well as make the scene much more realistic.

5 Tips for Your Next Family Photography Session

champagne_admin / Blog / / 0 Comments

Family photography can be a great way to capture those precious moments between you and your family, but it can also be a little stressful without the right preparation. That’s why going into your next family photo session with a few helpful tips can make it much easier. As one of the area’s top family photography studios, Champagne Photography has helped plenty of families capture moments to cherish for a lifetime.

Below, they’ve gathered some tips to help ensure your next photoshoot is a complete success!

Choose Appropriate Clothing

If you’re shooting outdoors during the summer, you probably don’t want to dress the whole family in suits and ties or other clothing better suited to fall and winter. Conversely, during the colder months, you should dress accordingly. Remember, the right clothing will help you feel more comfortable and relaxed during your family photoshoot.

Come Well-Rested

Family photography sessions don’t have to be stressful. However, they do require a lot of energy and can take a significant amount of time, so be sure you and all your family arrive well-rested. This will make it easier to follow the directions of the camera crew and ensure that for every photo, you and your family members look alert and attentive.

Include the Pets!

Many consider their favorite four-legged friend part of the family, so why not include them in your next photoshoot as well? Bringing your pet or pets along can be a great way to do something a little different. Just be sure to try and train them a bit beforehand and bring along a few toys to keep them occupied when they’re not in front of the camera.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time

Rushing around and preparing last minute for a photoshoot can stress you out, and that stress can transfer to your partner and other family members. Before a shoot, give yourself plenty of time to prepare: lay out your clothes ahead of time, pack any necessities, and try to arrive at the location early to minimize stress and maximize smiles!

Have Fun!

Having fun during your family photoshoot is one of the best ways to capture those special moments. Try to be relaxed and think of playful poses or games you usually play as a family. Choosing a unique location is another great way to have fun while in front of the camera.

4 Questions You’ve Always Wanted to Ask About Boudoir Photography

champagne_admin / Blog / / 0 Comments

When it comes to spicing things up with your partner or showing them your more intimate side, boudoir photography can provide a great opportunity. However, there are also a lot of misconceptions about the art form, which is why the team from Champagne Photography is here to clear things up.

Below you’ll find answers to the four questions you’ve always wanted to ask about boudoir photography, so read on.

Do You Have to Get Naked?

This is the first thing people assume who haven’t done much research about boudoir photography. It’s not the high-class equivalent of sending nudes! The goal of the boudoir photographer is to capture all the sultry mystique of the boudoir while also maintaining the client’s privacy, dignity, and most important of all, their boundaries. No clothes ever come off unless you communicate explicitly it’s something you want to do.

What Exactly Does “Boudoir” Mean Anyway?

The word “boudoir” has quite the history. It’s a derivative of the French word “boudeur,” which means “sulky or in a pouty sort of mood.” However, this word eventually transformed into what became referred to as the boudoir, or bedroom, encompassing all the things that go on behind those closed doors. In this sense, it carries an attractive mystique and intimate sensuality today’s leading photographers try to subtly capture.

What About the Wardrobe?

Are you worried that you won’t have anything exciting enough to wear for your boudoir photo shoot? Perhaps you want to try something different but aren’t quite sure what will look best on you. You’ll be glad to know that many of today’s leading boudoir photography studios also have extensive wardrobes to choose from, with some exquisitely sexy lingerie and outfits (which are dry-cleaned after each use). Of course, you’re also encouraged to bring along items from your own closet. This is because some familiar pieces of lingerie will make the pictures more personal both for you and your partner.

How Do You Make Clients Feel Comfortable?

Being in a room with a camera crew you don’t know and stripping down to your undergarments can certainly seem intimidating. However, many photography teams will help you lighten the mood a bit by sharing a glass of champagne with you and finding some of your favorite tunes to listen to while the shoot is going on. This helps everyone feel a bit more comfortable and makes the photo shoot fun and a bit less serious.
